Rochester Invites you to the Summer of Splashes and Shenanigans with The Little Mermaid and The Producers! Want to be a part of our world this summer here at the Rochester Opera House? Well, get those fins AND your producer hats on because it’s going to be a shell-tastic summer of fun, laughter, and a Broadway house full of epic music. Opening Friday, July 11th at 7:30pm, The Little Mermaid sails to the stage with the classic hits; “Kiss the Girl”, “Under the Sea”, and of course, “Part of Your World”. Disney’s The Little Mermaid musical premiered on Broadway on January 10th, 2008. The adaptation of the 1989 animated film received two Tony nominations, one for Best Lighting Design of a Musical, the other for Best Original Score. With a book by Doug Wright, music by Alan Menken, and lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, the production brings the beloved underwater tale to life and to the big stage. The story follows Ariel, an adventurous young mermaid, who dreams of life on land. After rescuing Prince Eric from a shipwreck, she falls in love with him and makes a deal with the sea witch, Ursula. The deal?...exchanging her voice for legs, but Ariel must get Eric to kiss her within three days or risk losing her soul to Ursula. With the help of her friends, Ariel navigates the challenges of her new life on land, aiming to get the handsome Prince Eric to kiss her before time runs out. The Rochester Opera House’s production stars Opera House vets; Eloise Ellis as Ariel, Chris Bradley as Ursula, and Marcus Provost as King Triton. Directed by the infamously talented, Scott Severance! Captivated by The Rochester Opera House’s production of Beauty and the Beast from our Summer 2024 season? Then don’t miss our second summer of Disney magic! The Little Mermaid runs through Saturday, August 2nd at 7:30pm. Followed by a wave of family-friendly fun, The Producers opens Friday, August 8th at 7:30pm. Ever wonder what it’s like to be a famous, successful Broadway producer? Well, you are by no means going to learn that during this knee-slapping, gut-busting show. The Producers is a musical comedy by comedic icon, Mel Brooks, adapted from his 1967 film. The Broadway production premiered on April 19th, 2001, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. The show became a record-breaking hit, winning 12 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score. This achievement surpassed Hello Dolly’s previous record of 10 wins, from all the way back in 1964! Mel Brooks was only 32 years old when the original 1967 film was first released. This directorial debut for Mel Brooks earned him an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. The story follows Max, a struggling Broadway producer, and Leo, a melancholy accountant. They cook up a scheme to get rich by producing the worst musical in the history of theater, raising far more money than needed, and planning to pocket the excess when the show flops. They choose a ridiculous and contemptuous script, thinking their production would close after one night, but instead, the show becomes a surprise hit. Will they be exposed? Get those tickets now to find out! This highly anticipated production stars local legend, Bill Hartery as Max, with Marcus Provost returning to star as Leo.
